Just a Number

“To teachers I’m just another child”.  Can anyone not relate to that thought?  Seger has a gift for taking thoughts we’ve all had, putting them to paper & music and somehow they become profound.  An article on school bullying got my attention.  The CDC has done another study & there are dots we can connect.  Is that reporter speak for, I’ll tell you what I think this all means, don’t bother to read or research it for yourself (or to have an independent thought)  Unkind & maybe undeserved, but my read on this is a shift & emphasis on guns & school shootings.  “Bullying victims are sneaking hundreds of thousands of firearms, knives and clubs into U.S. high schools”.

 Direct from the CDC study:

School associated violent deaths are rare.1

• 17 homicides of school-age youth ages 5 to 18 years occurred at school during the 2009-2010 school year.

• Of all youth homicides, less than 2% occur at school, and this percentage has been stable for the past decade.

In 2010, there were about 828,000 nonfatal victimizations at school among students 12 to 18 years of age.1

Approximately 7% of teachers report that they have been threatened with injury or physically attacked by a student from their school.1

In 2009, about 20% of students ages 12–18 reported that gangs were present at their school during the school year.1

In a 2011 nationally representative sample of youth in grades 9-12:2

• 12% reported being in a physical fight on school property in the 12 months before the survey.

• 5.9% reported that they did not go to school on one or more days in the 30 days before the survey because they felt unsafe at school or on their way to or from school.

• 5.4% reported carrying a weapon (gun, knife or club) on school property on one or more days in the 30 days before the survey.

• 7.4% reported being threatened or injured with a weapon on school property one or more times in the 12 months before the survey.

• 20% reported being bullied on school property and 16% reported being bullied electronically during the 12 months before the survey.

OK, it’s not the reporters fault.  I am an @ss, quick to judge & frequently wrong.  I seem to remember President Obama assigning the CDC to study school shootings/violence.  It’s hard for me to look at this “study” where a

gun=knife=club.  In what world are they equal?  The CDC wants to talk about mass/school shootings.  Problem, the numbers do not help their cause.  My guess only, since they didn’t publish numbers of guns, knives or clubs separately.  I think they lump them together to inflate their hype on guns in schools.  According to the CDC, there are around 50 million students in K thru college.  There were 828,ooo instances of reported victimizations, ages 12-18.  Statistically, any school student is very safe.  Reality, as always, is not the same.

“20% reported being bullied on school property ”  One/fifth of students are bullied in the survey year?  And this is after years of increasing anti-bullying laws, rules and soap box promises that politicians would END bullying & school violence once & for all!  But they haven’t fixed it, after all these years and studies and money spent.  Why can that be?  How can this keep happening?

Maybe because they don’t actually want to “fix” the problem.  The Obama administration/CDC is interested in promoting gun control.  This does not mean they want or support school shootings, but consider their efforts on bullying and compare it to energy spent on gun control.  Seems oblivious they only want to treat the symptom, not “cure” the cold.  There could and likely are other factors.

They have done studies on gun violence that discredit nearly every liberal talking point.  When the numbers are displayed broken down by neighborhood, not state, an overwhelming fact emerges.  There are no violent states, just small, violent area’s.  A correlation  between low income/gangs can be indicated, but again, who would want to cure a cold if they made their living off repeatedly treating that illness.

By the same token, are all schools violent?  Are all failing to stop bullying?  Or are some inner city schools overwhelmed?  What are the chances of a school in any of those violent neighborhoods being an oasis from gangs and violence?  Are those same schools heavily unionized?  Those are topics this administration does not want discussed.  Hence a “study” that leads to their desired conclusion, or at least, talking points.

Some personal experiences.

I attended a concert years ago.  The show was ruined for me & hundreds by three obnoxious drunks shouting over the music.  Several of us complained to several city police officers.  They nodded and did nothing.  I was sorely tempter to attack and fight them.  Frustrated beyond belief that the police would not do their job, but had I acted, I would be arrested, possibly sued by the drunks.

A friend was called by the school years ago.  His son was hurt & needed to be taken to a doctor.  His son had a broken jaw.  Broken by a bully he had been complaining about for a while.  The bully sucker punched him outside the gym.  The bully was suspended for ten days.  The school did not call the police or an ambulance.  My friend did call the police, who were reluctant.  He ended up having to sue in civil court for damages.  Bullies are not expelled because of the thousands of dollars in funding they bring to the school.  Expel them & another school gets that funding.

Three or four years ago, the high school my kids are now attending had a bullying incident.  Three, black, Sr high girls severely beat a black, Jr high girl.  We were very interested in how the school would handle this incident.  We were considering switching to a private school.  We never could find out what was done.  Must protect a child’s privacy, we are told.  But then, college’s are very secretive when it comes to campus violence.  I understand no school wants a reputation for violence, but what about the public’s right to know?

Would you knowingly send your daughter to a school with a high number of rapes over the years?  How can colleges keep such secrets for so many years?  It seems to me there is a lot of money spent on education.  We hear tuition costs are jumping at headline making rates.  And all school loans now go thru the federal government and are exempt from bankruptcy protections…..

My how I’ve jumped around….but there is a concise thought & conclusion.  Schools are an artificial environment created for educating our young in a group of similar age.  Since this environment has been taken over by central government control it has been on a path to failure only staved off by diminishing results, standards and accountability.  Government does not cause this, but creates the environment where failure thrives.

Pity the students trapped in public schools being bullied and ignored.  Can any of the bureaucrats presiding make them or us believe they aren’t just numbers….

Feel Like A Number
Words and music by bob seger

I take my card and i stand in line
To make a buck i work overtime
Dear sir letters keep coming in the mail
I work my back till it’s racked with pain
The boss can’t even recall my name
I show up late and i’m docked
It never fails
I feel like just another
Spoke in a great big wheel
Like a tiny blade of grass
In a great big field
To workers i’m just another drone
To ma bell i’m just another phone
I’m just another statistic on a sheet
To teachers i’m just another child
To irs i’m just another file
I’m just another consensus on the street
Gonna cruise out of this city
Head down to the sea
Gonna shout out at the ocean
Hey it’s me
And i feel like a number
Feel like a number
Feel like a stranger
A stranger in this land
I feel like a number
I’m not a number
I’m not a number
Dammit i’m a man
I said i’m a man

And this is a decent article with links.  My main gripe is him going along with the CDC narrative without question.

The Sad American

As I write this today, I can’t help but feel sad about the country that I love so much and how it’s moral values have gone in the gutter so quickly. There was a time when we were a land of laws and moral values that exceeded anything in history. Now, we are simply becoming another empire that will fail from within, as history will tell it. Anwar al-Awlaki was killed by an American missile. He was said to be a TERRORIST! Another American, Samir Khan, was also reported to have been killed in the drone hit. Both of these men, claimed to have been part of the Al Qaeda terrorist organization are reported as dead. Interestingly, Awlaki has been killed 4 times now, as reported by the media. He was killed a few times in 2009, but that didn’t seem to be enough, so they killed him again. So what is exactly wrong with all of this?

Gabby Presents an Opportunity

Allow me to first say, before I go any further, that the attack on Arizona Representative Gabriella Giffords was a horrible tragedy. Here was a member of Congress doing what we complain that members of Congress don’t do enough of, meeting with her constituents out in public. A mentally deranged individual takes advantage of such a moment and attacks not only the Congresswoman, but an entire crowd of people with a gun. Innocent lives are lost, most notably in my opinion being that of a nine year old little girl. All life ended before its time is tragic, but the loss of a child is even more more unjust. I feel sorry for all those involved, including the shooter, who was obviously suffering from some mental incapacity of his own. One day he will probably realize what he has done to so many innocent lives and will have to live with that. The burden of taking a life is not an easy one to carry. That burden is made significantly heavier when there was no justification.

Wednesday Night Open Mic for December 15, 2010

I couldn’t get to the open mic last night but have found a spare moment this evening to get some posted. I have worked both jobs at better than 16 hours each day for the last couple of days, so to say that I am a bit tired is an understatement. But I am persevering through it all. The new job is going great and I am learning a lot about the industry and how to do the job they hired me to do. And the old job is, well, the old job. I know how to do it but it is December which means working late nights and being swarmed when you come in. I did want to note for everyone that I won’t be offering any new articles during the week between Christmas and New Years. I will be traveling and enjoying spending time with my family and want to give them the attention that they deserve. I will be trying to jump in and participate throughout the day on Thursday. It appears that I may be working from home at least in the morning as we have some weather developing and here in the South, they shut things down when it snows. It is a bizarre thing for a northern boy to understand.

The Death of Honesty… and Hopefully NPR

So I have a confession to make. I am not a bigot. You know the kind of articles I have written here about idiotic Republicans. But I gotta tell you, when I go out into public and I see people with Obama T-shirts or bumper stickers or hats, I think to myself that they are identifying themselves first and foremost as liberals. I get worried, I get nervous. Now I remember listening to Rahm Emanuel talking about this and stating that the rise of a new, more fair, America is just beginning. That 2008 was just the first drop of blood. I don’t think there is any way to get away from these facts. But we have people who want to remind us that liberals are Americans too and this isn’t a war against liberals, it is a war against radical liberalism in the form of socialist or fascist policies. Alrighty then. Now that I have given my comedic version of Juan Williams remarks on O’Reilly’s program last week, we can simply laugh at how ridiculous it is that someone would have too strong a reaction to them. Yet the reaction from NPR was more than strong, it was conclusive and final. Juan Williams lost his job over what he said on Fox News. And that really bothers me. Maybe more than it should.

Are Tough Questions Out of the Question?

I once found myself at the crossroads of rational decision-making. Oh, it wasn’t some insane moment where life and death were being decided (well, perhaps my life and death). It wasn’t some moment where a major earth shattering event was unfolding. Nope…. I was in a bar. It just so happened that it was a biker bar. I used to frequent those when I was younger and thought myself a whole lot tougher than I am in my forties. There were buckets of testosterone on each table. Boxes of manhood and muscle were stacked behind the bar. The lighting was dim, the place was filthy, and the steady pounding of hard rock music was only broken every now and then by a selection from one of the superbands of the 70s. There didn’t seem to be a whole lot of value placed on intelligence in that bar. They dealt in respect and feats of strength. It was the kind of place you didn’t walk into unless you were part of the regular scene or you really did believe that you were a pretty tough hombre. I sat at a table with a group from a well known national biker gang, and the discussion turned to racism, and it weren’t good (bad grammar intentional!).

Tuesday Night Open Mic for July 13, 2010

We arrive at open mic off of a couple of nights of what I felt were good topics but somewhat limited discussions around them. I know I have been a little more edgy the last couple of nights (I prefer the term passionate, lol). Did that scare some people away from having some tough discussions? I have found myself frustrated this week with politics as I watch the idiots in Washington DC continue to go down paths of destruction. That has caused me to be, shall we say, blunt. I didn’t really back off of that on tonight’s topics either! I hope folks aren’t finding me so abrasive that they are shunning SUFA! For tonight’s topics I offer a bit of Al Franken’s election being exposed as a fraud, Europe increasing their invasion into privacy rights, the IMF telling the US to cut Social Security, and the FCC getting smacked down by the courts over a censorship rule. As always, it is open mic so feel free to add whatever topics you would like to talk about. The next post for the week will be Kent’s guest commentary on Thursday night so we have two days to discuss stuff here. I will also be going back and adding to the discussions from Monday and Tuesday. So fire away!

Freedom of the Press Under Duress?

I saw the headline for this article the other day. At first I skimmed right past it. After a moment or two I thought about what I had passed, wondering whether it really did say what I thought it said. So I went up and found the headline again. It read, “Michigan Considers Law to License Journalists.” OK, it really did say what I thought that it said. I then read the article and found that it was exactly as bad as I had feared. It seems that simply going after the 2nd Amendment rights are not quite enough for those in power. They now appear to believe that they have the right to begin regulating the use of rights singled out in the 1st Amendment as well. While the proposed legislation does not stop anyone from writing whatever they like, I see it as a step in that direction. Further I see it as a result, and not an unexpected one, of the politicians in the US finding that they no longer can control the message to the people.
Government Begins to Understand Their Loss of Control

And Where Exactly IS the Line Between Parents and Government?

Restricted Logo XXXI didn’t have a lot of time to write about something big tonight so I wanted to find something I could write about off the top of my head. As I started to peruse the news, this article simply jumped out at me. I found it extremely interesting given the discussions that we had the other day during open mic about government intervening in order to protect the child. In Dallas, a father showed “graphic pornography” to his 8 and 9 year old daughters. I don’t know how graphic it was, they aren’t sharing that. But that was the description. The girl’s mother, who id divorced from the father, wanted to file charges against the father. Apparently there is a law that specifically states that he can not be prosecuted for doing this. I will be interested in hearing more about the rights of parents versus the rights of the state to intervene, especially in a case such as this, where the harmful material in question is really a matter of interpretation.

Leave My Lions Alone

PSU Logo 2I saw this article this afternoon. I know that many of you here peruse a lot of the national news sources, so you saw it as well. There was a brief message posted about it in yesterday’s thread. I had already decided that I wanted to have a quick discussion about it. The discussion is obviously going to start around this t-shirt controversy that is being overblown at Penn State University. However, once I discuss that I am going to discuss the general tone of the political world, or more important the general tone of society. Because the Penn State thing is a very minor blip in a war against christianity that has been building for quite some time. And I wonder just how it got where it did, and how it will end up. Why is it that it seems that so many people are offended by anything to do with Christianity? And why is it OK to go on the attack over that offense?

White House is Proving They are Not Fit to Lead

Boo Hoo PosterWell, I have returned home and can now get back to writing like I am supposed to write! I was out of town all last week and operating from a hotel with spotty internet access. On top of that I was quite busy with work, which had me on a weird schedule working in a different location. But I did enjoy my time there and met quite a few cool folks in Dawsonville, Georgia. I touched on this subject a week or two ago, and I was going to let it rest because when I talked about it them I thought it was nothing more than a bold and outlandish statement from a rogue idiot in the White House (Anita Dunn). But today saw all the top administration officials from the White House hit the Sunday morning media circuit to further their message and attempt to really begin to take down Fox News. It was one thing when a statement was made. It is quite another now that it has become clear that President of the United States thinks the most pressing item on his plate is taking down a media outlet that doesn’t ask how high when he says jump….

Obama and His Radical Czars

Radical DemocratsI was going through conversations the other night when someone, I forget who, posted a video that they wanted all of us to watch. I watched, and was enraged immediately. The video was basically talking about how one of these new czars was espousing the idea of fining bloggers for writing things that were negative about the government. I had to do a little research, but I knew I would be writing an article about any jerk-off who thinks that THAT is an OK thing to do. I was going to stick to that topic, but then in Tuesday’s comments, I was challenged by Ray, who didn’t believe that the czars being appointed by Obama were all that radical. He demanded proof. I then decided that tonight would be dedicated to all the czars, and the radical pasts they have. Because make no bones about it, Barack Obama has surrounded himself with perhaps the most radical group of advisors in the history of the Presidency. I thought I could write about these jokers in one night. I realized I was wrong. There was simply too much to write. So it had to get pushed to tonight instead of last night. And for the record, the logo to the left is the logo for the Radical Social Democratic Party.

The Death of Whiners and CryBabies

dem-crying-baby-sealYou know, I am a fairly blunt and straightforward guy. I tell it the way I see it. And while I do a pretty fair job, in my own humble opinion, of being a kinder and gentler USWeapon when discussing things on my blog, sometimes it is tough. You see…. I despise whining and crying and people getting their feelings hurt over something that they should not have any issue with. So while I intend to be ethical and moral in my foundations for a new way forward, I have determined that I will abandon those priciples when it comes to people’s feelings and political correctness. A USWeapon administration will abolish political correctness and move whining and being a crybaby up on the offense scale to the level of treason. Punishable by death. The American mentality shall be reinforced in Americans and the time for weakness is over.
Why Today’s Crybabies Need to Shut the Hell Up

Silencing His Critics?

internet-shutting-down-nowSo I saw yet another news story hit today, and being the skeptic that I have become, I immediately saw this as another part of a massive set-up. Now as many of you know, I am not a fan of conspiracy theories. It isn’t that I don’t think these things are possible, it is just that I don’t devote time on my blog to them much because there are lots of places where you can go do that. And what I am trying to do here is more education and rallying the troops for what may come. What I am doing is providing information that you can take, process, and decide for yourself what it means to you and what you are going to do about it. I do intend at some point to use every one of you to help form a plan. But we are still building the network here and learning and figuring everything out. As you saw in the upcoming articles, there is going to be significant debate and introspective thought upcoming.
Am I Getting Worried About Nothing

Silencing Christianity

christian-persecutionAs many of you may recall, I recently wrote a post suggesting that the religious right be minimized in the Republican platform and stripped of power in setting the agenda. I laid out my reasoning. Some agreed and some disagreed. I was asked yesterday about a current trend in discrimination against christians in America. I offered to write a post about it because there were certainly a few different religious discussions threatening to break out. Couple this with the recent discussion I saw about Muslims and I feel like perhaps the time has come for a bit of a religious discussion. I enter into the territory with trepidation, however….

Because We Cannot Let Maureen Dowd Suffer

I think you all know what I think of the Main Stream Media. All of them are biased. Most, but not all, of them are biased to the left. I chuckle at the sheer stupidity of anyone who attempts to make the claim that this isn’t true. They point to Fox News, but in reality Fox does pretty unbiased news during the day and freely admits that they turn the station over to conservative hosts at night. But it is far too easy to point out MSNBC, CNN, NBC, CBS, The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, LA Times, Keith Olberman, Katie Couric, and the wonderful Mrs. Dowd…. you get the point. The fact is that the news simply is not the news any more.

Here We Go Again… The Absolutely Not-Fairness Doctrine

unmasking-fairness-doctrine1This has been a topic that has popped onto and off of people’s radars for the last couple of years. But now that a certain party has control of both Houses and the White House, they are beginning to do what what most of us knew they would do. They are taking every single agenda item they want and forcing it through to law while no one can stop them. The Democrats have made it clear that they are going to make the move to re-institute the so called “Fairness Doctrine”. They claim they just want to make the talk radio circuit fair to the poor liberals who don’t have a voice. And I sympathize with the poor liberals. I mean without talk radio they really are doomed. They simply don’t have any way to be able to reach the American public with their message of togetherness and bi-partisanship. It just isn’t fair.
Unmasking the Shut Conservative Talk Radio Up Doctrine

“RUSH”ing to Spend Our Tax Dollars

It seems that the Democratic party just isn’t quite sure what to say when a member of the media is not lauding them for their accomplishments or telling us all about the savior and why we are good and righteous people for electing him. They have actually commissioned an online petition against Rush Limbaugh for his comment that was directed at the new President. His comment: “I hope he fails”. I am not one to stick up for Rush very often. I think he and Ann Coulter have gone off the deep end a bit, but let’s look at the last 8 years, shall we?
Why Democrats are Hypocritical Crybabies

I Shouldn’t be Subjected to Yankee’s Fans, Either…

Today we see in the news that the Freedom From Religion Foundation is suing to keep Barack Obama from using the phrase “So Help Me God” during his official taking of the oath of office on January 20. Additionally the group is suing to keep Pastor Rick Warren from giving the invocation. According to the group, failure to eliminate these things is a violation of the separation of Church and State. Nut Jobs in America pushing themselves on the rest of us is what I say…
