Weekend Open Chat

As we prepare some new articles to consume, let’s continue some chats that have been ongoing.  I have a discussion for Charlie that I will bring forward and hope some other subjects will continue as well.  I’m still in travel mode till Sunday.  Sunday is also the “Great American Race”, the Daytona 500.  This is usually the only race I watch, unless I catch one when the weather is bad.   I have not missed on Daytona 500 since they started being shown live on TV.  This year, Danica Patrick has the pole, the first women ever to hold a pole position in the history of NASCAR.  Good luck to Danica.

Capitalism v Communism

In having some discussions with people over the last few days it has blossomed in my mind the idea that many of those who so vehemently lambast capitalism have no understanding what capitalism actually is. As a result they attack and attack using examples and historical incidents as justification for ending capitalism when those examples are no such justification. So I feel like I have to write this article to clarify that point, to help those who are floundering with those conversations gain some understanding of what my belief is in capitalism. Further it will help those who attack it understand why I refuse to accept the idea that some form of communism/socialism/fascism because it is not only immoral, but is also far worse for any people who aspire to live free.

Defending Atlas Shrugged and Objectivism – Part Two

Last night we began this discussion by talking about Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged. The fictional novel was based around a philosophy called objectivism. Tonight we resume our discussion by talking about objectivism. I will admit that I am a fan of objectivism. I am a fan because it makes sense to me. Further, in practice, it is the only philosophy that actually has a base in reality. I think  that the most important aspect of what I need to cover this evening will be actually defining and explaining objectivism. It appears that the most common error that I have seen when discussing it is that those who are opposed don’t really understand what Rand was attempting to lay out with objectivist theory. They have a false idea of what it really is. I don’t think that it is simply because people are too dim to understand (although that is true in some cases). I think, instead that the problem comes from the mistake of forming opinions without really attempting to understand and the fact that Rand didn’t necessarily do a great job of covering some of the aspects that were important.

March Towards Socialism Part 2 UPDATED!

socialism1So we continue on the path to understanding what exactly is going on in today’s political environment. I think this is an important series to be covering. Folks like Adam, who jump in and throw around insults and bemoan being called socialist, need to be educated. More importantly, everyone needs to be educated. The media and the Democrats tend to try to make anyone who applies the “socialist tag” to anything out to be right wing radicals who are just fear mongering “like Republicans do”. People need to understand that socialist isn’t meant to be a negative label, at least not from me. It is meant to be an accurate label, that accurately describes what is happening in today’s society, right under our noses. I am fine with socialism, just not in America under a constitution that expressly forbids it. If people want to give socialism a shot, I can roll with that, just not here, move to some other country and try it there. HERE, constitutional law forbids socialism.

Dude, Can You Loan Me Some Cash to Buy Your Car?

Now we see the American automotive industry looking for a bailout along with the financial industry. Let’s take a hard look at what is being proposed here and, more importantly, who is proposing it. I personally oppose bailing out the auto industry. I opposed bailing out the financial industry too under the bill that went through. I am a believer in Economic Darwinism. But read on and see what I am thinking. Then let’s talk about it.
