Why We are Failing Miserably to Fix America

I had been planning to do this article last week, but simply didn’t find the time to do it the way that I wanted to do it, so it got pushed to tonight. I have found myself increasingly frustrated as I watch the goings on in Washington DC. It isn’t simply because the Dems are in charge and I don’t like what they are doing, although that certainly does play into my frustrations. The GOP is every bit as bad at getting us back to where we need to be. I found that the frustration I was feeling was because what I feel is breaking the back of the American economy is the progressive movement’s continued moves to increase the size and scope of government. The bottom line, no matter what it is that you believe politically, is that we simply cannot afford to do all the things that we are attempting to do. Health care, welfare, extended unemployment benefits, more regulations on top of the regulations that were already not being enforced, two wars that we should no longer be in, stimulus, and pork, pork, and more pork. Our federal government has gotten to the point where they are spending money like Britney Spears. And there doesn’t seem to be a psychotic father to step in and take over control of the finances.

How Many REALLY Want Freedom?

I have been thinking a lot lately about the concept of freedom and liberty as it pertains to the discussions that we have here at Stand Up For America. I read the responses that come in to the things that I write. Often I can find plenty of people who are more than willing to agree with me or tell me how wrong I am. But what I have have been attempting to ascertain is the level of commitment that people have to the principles that they espouse on this site. Remember, quite a while ago, I spoke to the idea that some things I would write would be discussions about how things should be while others would be more concerned with dealing with where we really are. Well, what I offer tonight is a bit of a combination of the two. Because in the discussions that we have been having around the way things are, I have begun to feel like the way things should be is not something most are comfortable with.

Tuesday Night Open Mic for April 13, 2010

As I begin working on the open mic topics tonight I find that I am really struggling to write responses to articles that are as coherent and tangible as I would like them to be. I don’t know where I misplaced my writing skills this evening but I have the following four open mic topics written and I am not happy with any of them! It has thus far been a hectic week of housework. Farmer’s market and planting bushes on Saturday. New porch lights and planters on Sunday. Monday was running a new outlet and transformer for new landscaping lighting, including burying wire until 11:00pm. And today was work (the regular kind). But with weather in the 70’s, there is no better time to work on the yard, and I love working in the yard. I am working on a few new articles that are going to be good. I know it has been slow on here this week. That will change I am sure. All it takes is the right topic and folks get fired up and ready to debate! As always please feel free to add the topics you want to talk about below. They will probably be better than my selections this week anyway, lol….

State of the Union? Same old Crap….

So I have finished watching both the State of the Union and the Republican rebuttal. I thought both were weak. I thought both were full of bulldookey. I am not going to address every single thing that the President said tonight, but I am going to address some of the things that jumped out at me. Because in the end, I felt like he was right back in campaign mode, but more importantly, he was right back to claiming one thing while doing something completely different. I am sure that Black Flag will say “what did you expect?” I would answer that I expected exactly what I got. I am simply pointing out my disappointment that I was not surprised. And there are just so many things that I have to rebuke, if nothing else for the plethora of facebook posts from all manner of my friends saying how great Obama was and how awesome it is that he is on our side and how proud they are to be Democrats tonight. It literally almost drove me mad. Had I not had a few Raptor hybrids that D13 sent me to test out, I wouldn’t have had anything to kick and might have gone out and attempted to remove the pom poms and springs from Nancy Pelosi’s hindquarters. By the way D13, they really are as trainable as you promised.

Tuesday Night Open Mic for January 5, 2010

Open mic returns to its regularly scheduled night. Last week was a Wednesday, but the discussions were just as good. I would still like to see more of folks using the format that I do to bring their own topics to the table. I know discussing my chosen topics is fun and all, but with all the multitudes of brainpower here at SUFA, I know there are tons of other interesting stories and thoughts out there that we are missing. The same goes for the guest commentary pieces. I haven’t seen nearly enough of them lately. I know the holidays are a busy time with family. But now it is time to get back to business and begin hearing everyone’s thoughts on how things are and how we can make them better. It is no fun to just talk about what I want to talk about. So bring it on!

Wednesday Night Open Mic for December 30, 2009

Since there was no open mic for Tuesday Night I figured I would do one for Wednesday night this week. And in doing so we have the final open mic night for 2009. A tumultuous year to say the least. I mean let’s face it, it was the absolute worst year for politics since…. 2008! I continue to spend time with my son, which is awesome! Last night we watched District 9, and I was not blown away the way I hoped to be. Tonight it was “Public Enemies” with Johnny Depp. I have to admit that he is one of my favorite actors. Extremely talented, very versatile, and in a showing of how messed up the academy is, devoid of the honor of winning an Oscar. He is, in my opinion, the most talented actor to not have an Oscar, and there are tons that have one that are not nearly as talented as Depp. The movie was good. Another glorification of a criminal, which is nothing new in Hollywood. But a good movie, and Depp was good.

Better Than Nothing? I Don’t Think So…

After listening to reactions all day to the fact that the Senate is on the verge of passing what is called a “monumental health care bill,” I have come to some conclusions about how delusional the folks who follow the madness have become. First allow me to say that the Dems are correct, it is a monumental bill. A monumental mistake. The more I dig, the more I find what I don’t like. But I do realize that this is simply a stepping stone for them. This gets the foot in the door. Once passed, they will be able to quietly tack on whatever they like on the backside of appropriations bills or stimulus bills or energy bills. They will never again have to wrestle with a “health care” bill. But that is not the topic for tonight. The topic is, instead, the mindset of today’s political pundits and the folks that follow them.

Tuesday night Open Mic for November 17, 2009

Open Mic is upon us once again. I have to say tha tI have liked the idea of open mic since we have started doing it regularly. It certainly gives me a slightly easier night for writing. But i am a bit disappointed in the fact that the original intent has not been nearly as realized as I had hoped. Certainly I want to foster discussion, and thus offer 4 short topics that can get some discussions going. However, I really thought that there would be more of folks offering topics of their own, as opposed to simply replying to mine. So don’t be afraid to post the things that you want to discuss as well as my topics. Or pull topics over from other days that you didn’t get to finish. That was the idea for open mic, a chance to tell me what we are going to discuss today, hitting the important things to you rather than me. None-the-less, we have some interesting topics this week. We have gay marriage, taxing the rich, and government agencies attempting to control the message.

The False Emotional Appeal of Health Care Reform

Health Care SymbolAs I monitored the comments to yesterday’s article on the public option, I was saddened to see some of the folks who discussed things fall into the common trap of using an emotional appeal in order to attempt to win a debate. Unfortunately, the entire health care reform debate has become little more than an emotional argument along the same lines of so many other political topics and debates. I won’t attempt to say that the GOP arguments are not also just as emotional in their “appeals”. The GOP is just as guilty in this tactic as the Democrats are. I am going to point out a few emotional appeals that are flawed positions from the GOP. And then I am going to delve in to the health care discussions here lately, and point out the emotional appeals. I will also point out where a few of them are fatally flawed. But what I would like to do is point out to everyone that these emotional appeals are quite effective rhetoric, but completely useless against those who use reason and logic as their starting point.
Why Emotional Appeals are the Tool of the Weak

Tuesday Night Open Mic for November 3, 2009

Open Mic 1Good Morning fine readers of Stand Up For America. As I begin writing this evening I am in a fairly good mood. Tuesday night open mic is upon us again and it seems that the very elections we discussed yesterday are dominating the news cycles tonight. I am going to avoid open mic’ing the big governor’s races and the “message sent to Democrats” nonsense that seems to be dominating the airwaves. I will touch on some of the election night news in some different ways, however. I am excited to be working on what I think are some good upcoming articles and I have been discussing a few things with some of the folks that read here daily for future ways to get us back to discussing the things we need to be discussing. I do have a request of everyone though… If you have any guest pieces that you are thinking about, I am in need. I have one from Black Flag that I plan on posting this week, and I know many of you have been anticipating that one. But I have a specific need here…

Health Care Part 1: Making The Case for Reform

Health Care SymbolSo I am finally ready to begin the health care series that I have been working on. I will say up front as I begin this series of articles that I am NOT the expert in this arena. I wish that I could say that I am. But there is so much information out there, and even more misinformation out there, that it might take a lifetime to read it (and the first lifetime of reading may only get you through the bill itself once they are done writing the massive thing). I wanted to take a moment here in the first part to this series to discuss the “need” for health care reform. Health care is such a gigantic subject, and there are so many parts to it. So the term “health care reform” in and of itself does nothing to tell us what part of the system they intend to “reform” (since government is doing it you can read “reform” as RUIN). We will get into the actual proposals and bills being offered in later parts. For now, let’s understand what is in play and whether the claims being made about the need for health care reform are accurate.

Pigs Revenge… Just the Facts Please

Swine Flu with PigI have seen several comments on this site over the last couple of weeks that lead me to believe that many of us are quite uneducated in regard to the Swine Flu pandemic that has been proclaimed by the World Health Organization. And it is starting to hit the news cycle regularly again, after an initial die-down following the first outbreaks. So I thought maybe I would take some time to weigh in on it, and perhaps even give my left leaning folks some stuff that even they can agree with (after all it is no fun having them NEVER agree with me). So I am going to answer some of the myths about the H1N1 virus, using information I found on the web. And I am then going to quickly discuss the entire subject broadly to offer my thoughts on where we are and why.

Transparency I Can’t See Through

democrat_and_republican_symbols1When I was a kid, I used to have the habit of walking or standing in the way of whatever my parents would be watching on the television. Inevitably, I would get the comment from my father that I “make a better door than a window,” letting me know that he cannot see through me. I have never forgotten that phrase and I continue to use it on my son and Mrs. Weapon. But I think that it is quite safe to say that, despite campaign promises to “bring transparency to Washington,” this administration, like all those before it, has no interest in being transparent. In fact I think that this administration is far less transparent than any administration in my lifetime. So I have to say that government really makes a better lead lined concrete wall than a window these days.

Making Nationalized Health Care MANDATORY…

I wanted to write tonight but I have found that perparing for my trip after a long day of work is proving more time consuming that I had intended. So rather than leaving you all with nothing, I decided that I would post the article that I was planning to write about this evening. Starting to see bills like this pop up really bothers me and worries me at the same time. It seems that the Senate has decided that not only will Congress plan on making national health care a reality, they will also work to make it a punishable crime to decide that you don’t want coverage at all. As I said, little time this evening so this is the article exactly as it appeared. I will try to find time while traveling tomorrow to jump in and add my thoughts.

ABC Changes Name Name to SBC…

ABC All Barack ChannelLast Wednesday night we saw the official move by ABC to abandon their old moniker and adopt a new one. I have to admit I was a bit surprised that it was ABC that did it rather than MSNBC. The latter being so far in the liberal camp that it cannot even be considered a news source any longer. I was actually initially OK with the idea that ABC was going to give an hour long block of time to President Obama in order for him to tell America about his health care plan and why we have a crisis that only he can solve. After all, there is nothing wrong with him making his case. Where I lost my being OK with things was when they refused to allow any groups opposing Nationalized Health Care to buy advertising spots during the program or to be able to offer any sort of rebuttal or alternative ideas on the channel. It showed me that the America Broadcasting Company has officially changed into the State Broadcasting Company (SBC)….

Dual Issue Article

stand-up-for-americaI was sitting here thinking about what I wanted to write about tonight and there were several issues that interested me that I was considering. The problem is that none of them were issues that were going to be enough to fill up an entire article for the night. I wanted to discuss Barney Franks and his return to the Bill O’Reilly arena this evening. It certainly interested me, especially after watching it twice. Another topic that caught my eye, especially in light of some of the health care discussions that have been happening on the site lately, was that of 50 Doctors and medical professionals indicted by the federal government for medicare fraud. Neither of these issues warranted a full article for me this evening, and I didn’t want to start researching something bigger knowing I have some long work days coming up. So I decided to do both of them…

March Towards Socialism Series Finale…

socialism1Ah… so we have marched through history gaining a better understanding of where the moves towards socialism/fascism began and grew. Now we move on to the last couple of years, with the end of the Bush Presidency and the beginning of the Obama administration. I must again say that I know there are a lot of things that I am not touching on here. I can’t write a full history of the US. I just write what comes to my mind. I think about things and go and research them. So in this final section we will touch on a few really big mistakes of George W. Bush, but primarily focus on the Obama administration and what they have done and plan to do, and why this is bad for our country.

Guest Commentator… You Won’t Believe It

blackflagsymbolguest-commentaryI have bumped this post back up a bit so that some of the new readers that join can partake in what BF added to the economic discussion. This article was originally posted on February 8. OK, I am going to take a bit of a risk here. As the hundreds of you who have followed this blog for the last couple of months are well aware, there have been some rather uncomfortable comment exchanges between myself and one of the more frequent commenters on Stand Up For America. We often disagree on well… just about everything. I have generally simply quit debating him. I have tried to be clear that it isn’t personal. I simply won’t debate when it devolves into lack of respect or any type of circular argument that doesn’t give me the courtesy of benefit of the doubt on my morals or principles. However….

The Messiah Recants Again… and Again

I am going to continue to call out these things. It isn’t just because I disagree with the direction that Obama and the Democratic leadership (I despise even calling them leaders because it is an insult to real leaders everywhere) are taking the country. And make no bones about it, I completely disagree with the direction they are heading. I will continue to call out these things because I hope that some of the Democrats who read this blog, and who fully support Obama based on what he says, will eventually understand that he is lying through his teeth each time he addresses the nation. If the guy was actually doing any of the things he claimed I might support him a bit.

Is Obama’s Economic Stimulus Plan a Good Idea?

The Office of the President Elect (a truly made up office for the record) has issued several statements over the last several weeks that clue us in to the intentions that the messiah has for fixing the economy. One of the most covered and almost universally accepted in the media is the trillion dollar plus economic stimulus plan that he intends to get through Congress within the first couple of weeks in office. The question is: Is this a good idea?

Libertarian Party Act VII

libertarian-party-sealAs promised, we move directly into Act VII of dissecting the Libertarian Party Platform. That last part was fairly tough for me. I had been cruising along and starting to think that maybe I could get behind this party, and then I hit a financial roadblock. That hasn’t ruled them out, but I certainly need some convincing that those parts can work.

I Am Suing My Readers for Disagreeing With Me

I understand that this is a bit of rant rather than the “hard core” politics that we have been covering here. But every now and then I have to just vent, and this is my blog after all. So while I am intensely grateful for all of you who come to read it, I sometimes have to just go my own way and rant. Thank you for indulging me. And besides I did a lot of research tonight for the Cabinet Selections post only to realize that it is too much to make into a post….. and I surely didn’t want to disappoint anyone by not having something for you to wake up to….
