Tuesday Night Open Mic for June 15, 2010

As I begin writing this introduction to the open mic for tonight, I am watching the Celtics versus the Lakers, and hoping that I can will my boys in green to the win and another NBA chamionship. By the time I post this to the site, we will know whether they were able to seal the deal or whether the Lakers managed to stop them and force a game 7. The open mic topics for tonight have a lot of questions for all of you. We are discussing Hydrogen Powered cars, North Korea’s threats against the United Nations, the Democrats chances of retaining 59 Senate seats, and the inability of today’s higher education institutions to prepare graduates to effectively adapt to the modern working world. The Hydrogen vehicle stuff is one where I am relying on some of you science minded folks to weigh in with your thoughts. Obviously, it is open mic, so feel free to fire away with topics of your own as well!

So How Much is that Old Rusted Government Worth?

Cash for Clunkers SignGood Evening All! I apologize for the unplanned evening off last night. I am currently down with my son visiting my father and grandmother. It is a trying time here. My grandmother is quite ill. We are down to that time when she can go anytime, and where every minute spent with her is precious. She had not seen my son (her great grandson) in 3 years. At the rate he is growing, that means she hasn’t seen him in about a foot and 40 pounds! She was amazed to see how big he has gotten (only 3 inches shorter than his dad now). Needless to say, this week is all about her. When she is up and lucid, I am there. That is not a plea for pity. Believe me there is no need to pity me. I have had my grandma for 40 years, and that is more than many get. And I have never missed an opportunity to see her or to tell he that I love her. So I have no regrets on my relationship with her. But it is meant to help you all understand why writing may be hit or miss the rest of this week.

Quick Hits for the Night

I am left with little time to write this evening. I am ecstatic to have my son here for the summer. That is a normal thing for me. What is not normal is that this is a teenager who actually wants to spend time with and hang out with his dad. So I am taking advantage of it by doing just that. It will mean that some nights I don’t get to write as extensively as I would like to do, but I will endeavor to still post an article whenever possible. I appreciate everyone’s understanding. Priorities have to be kept in order. And he is at the top of the list. I initially wanted to give my thoughts on the Obama press conference tonight, but that will take more time than I am left with. So I decided on hitting a topic quickly and letting us discuss it. My quick hit topic for this evening is the Senate proposal that failed yesterday, that would have allowed concealed weapon permits to work from state to state…

How Do We Stop Legislative Madness?

pork-bustersI was watching Glenn Beck’s (Yes I know some of you have issue with him, but he is entertaining) video about the cap and trade legislation this evening and he was railing against the pork that was put into the bill at the last minute. And this got me steaming again on this topic and I decided that I wanted to discus the subject with everyone and figure out how we can begin to curb this practice in the US Congress. We have discussed the idea before, but we need to really start figuring out how we can stop it. The common practice has become to add pork to legislation in order to get people to vote for a bill that they would otherwise not vote for. And it is ridiculous and, in my opinion, criminal. And the fact that members of Congress simply smile and tell us that this is just part of doing business in Washington pisses me off to no end. Is this the Hope and Change that everyone voted for? Because it seems like it is nothing but more of the same with a dose of HGH…

Arlen Specter… Harbinger of Destruction

specter-buttonThe news flash out of Washington today is devastating for those of us who are committed to smaller government and less interference in our personal affairs. While I continue to say that BlackFlag is correct that the color of shit these days doesn’t matter, it does matter in terms of what can be accomplished and what cannot. Any overwhelming majority of either color of shirts, especially the blue ones, radically speeds up the process of government involving itself in every aspect of private industry and personal affairs. So what is this news? Arlen Specter has defected from his party and announced that he is now….. a Democrat. This is bad, bad news for the country if you happen to be against the giant increase in the scope and size of government. The Democratic Party, is now virtually unstoppable.
The Out of Control Government Just Lost its Air Brakes

Letting Stevens Off the Hook

I have a couple of thoughts on this subject. Many of you will remember that former Senator Ted Stevens from Alaska was indicted on federal charges some time ago. He was convicted of seven counts of felony corruption. It was an embarrassment for the Republican Party, at a time when they certainly didn’t need any further embarrassment. It seems some things have changed in regard to his case, certainly the tone against him from Washington has changed as well. I decided that I would address this from both sides of the issue because I think doing so demonstrates the game politicians are playing with us.

The Messiah Recants Again… and Again

I am going to continue to call out these things. It isn’t just because I disagree with the direction that Obama and the Democratic leadership (I despise even calling them leaders because it is an insult to real leaders everywhere) are taking the country. And make no bones about it, I completely disagree with the direction they are heading. I will continue to call out these things because I hope that some of the Democrats who read this blog, and who fully support Obama based on what he says, will eventually understand that he is lying through his teeth each time he addresses the nation. If the guy was actually doing any of the things he claimed I might support him a bit.

Taxes Part 2… How Do We Fix It?

taxes-scrabbleIn part one about taxes I took the time to discuss my views on taxes; Which ones were constitutional in my view and which ones were not. And I am writing this one simultaneously. What is right and what needs to be the way forward are two different discussions in my opinion. So I wanted to keep them separate from one another. That thread for discussion of what taxes are constitutional and this one for what might be a better way to incorporate taxes in the government as I would attempt to run it today. So here goes…
Part 2, the Where do we Go from Here

My View on Taxes… Part 1

taxes-scrabbleI hate taxes. I think we can all agree with that statement. I don’t go as far as calling all taxes theft. But that doesn’t mean that I am OK with all of the taxes that we pay. Black Flag and I had  this mini discussion a month or two ago and I said then I would write about taxes when I had a chance to clarify where I stand on them. And it is a harder piece to write than I would have figured, only because I had to really think about a lot of them and consider whether they are fair or not, whether they contribute to the greater good or not. But since I write about politics, I do feel this is an important thing to ferret out.

Economic Debate… Without Politicians

I found this article out there and it makes sense to me. The article was by a writer named Marc Rotterman and was called “Let’s Come Together to Save Our Country’s Economy”. It was an interesting idea that he was espousing, that the Republicans in Congress get together with Democrats that think President Obama and Nancy Pelosi are going too far with their liberal agenda spending. I thought “hmm, interesting, a summit to come up with a better economic plan”. In the end I think I have a better idea…
Why Don’t We Let Economists Solve the Economic Crisis?

I can whip Chuck Norris, Too

If I drank enough, I might get silly enough to mutter those words. It’s a good thing I don’t drink. One thing that I don’t want anyone to get away from understanding is that the President is just a human being. I mean how many times have we heard people speaking completely out of their ass. “I can whip your ass”, only to never have the guts to try. They never thought they could but they talked a great game. “I am going to tell my boss what an asshole he is”, only to never find the cajones to say a word. Well, President Obama is no different than everyone else. He can talk a great game too. Problem is…. Talk is cheap.

Pissed Off Yet America? We Need a Change

stand-up-for-americaAs part of my daily rituals, I routinely go out and seek other blogs to find out what people are saying. I have been struggling a bit lately with figuring out exactly where I wanted to go with this blog, whether I was going to push Libertarianism, simply give daily reports on current news, or maybe begin writing daily poems dedicated to the trees. I realized that last one might lose me some of my valuable readers, so I ruled it out quickly. But really, how do I want to proceed. I have found one common thread in what I read out there and I think that it may provide me an answer for where I go next….

Are Libertarians Up To The Task?

libertarian-party-sealAs with the “Direction of the Republican Party” thread, this one has been extremely active so I have moved back up towards the top of the page. This was originally posted February 20. Many of you know that I started this blog as a way to ferret out my beliefs and start providing some viewpoints that I feel are important. The “Direction of the Republican Party” post has been far and away the most read article I have written. So now I want to discuss another option that is out there on the table. The Libertarian party easily has the most solid platform of the bigger parties. So I want to talk with everyone about whether they are up to the task of really operating on the big stage. So far they have progressed only as far as AAA in the minor leagues. They show promise. But will they find that they need a little more movement on that fast ball if they want to make it in the big leagues?

And 3 Senators Who Crossed the Party Line

I have posted the thread on the 7 Democrats that crossed their party lines and voted no on the ridiculous economic spendulus bill. I hailed them for holding to their beliefs in the face of tremendous pressure from their party. It is only fair that I now do the same for the Republican Senators who refused to vote the way that their party demanded that they vote. This is not an endorsement of the stances that they took. I hated the bill. But I do think that these three took a bit more of a chance than even the Democrats from the House did.

7 Democrats Who Stood Their Ground

I started this post a couple of weeks ago. It sat in my rough drafts section as I tackled other issues and offered my thoughts on the stimulus and other topics. The sad part is that when I started it, there were 11 Democrats who had stood their ground and not let the party dictate what they believed to be true. We have since seen the passage of the bill, and the final vote. The good news: 7 stuck to their guns and did what they felt was right regardless of party pressures that I am sure were quite demanding. The bad News: 5 others rolled over and showed their belly to Queen Nancy. But I wanted to put these guys out there so that you all knew which 7 in Congress held to their beliefs rather than their party’s beliefs.
Let’s See Who Votes For Their Constituents rather than Their Party

You Can’t Handle the Truth (Commission)

It seems to me that Democrats are being a bit bitchy these days. They are like that girl you used to date, who was a complete social retard. You dumped her when you found her rifling through your sock drawer looking for some kind thing you did wrong. Now she still tracks your moves and calls each girl you date and tells her what an asshole you are. In other words, she puts a lot of effort into proving you are bad rather than say… cleaning up her own kitchen. That is the Democrat today…

Here We Go Again… The Absolutely Not-Fairness Doctrine

unmasking-fairness-doctrine1This has been a topic that has popped onto and off of people’s radars for the last couple of years. But now that a certain party has control of both Houses and the White House, they are beginning to do what what most of us knew they would do. They are taking every single agenda item they want and forcing it through to law while no one can stop them. The Democrats have made it clear that they are going to make the move to re-institute the so called “Fairness Doctrine”. They claim they just want to make the talk radio circuit fair to the poor liberals who don’t have a voice. And I sympathize with the poor liberals. I mean without talk radio they really are doomed. They simply don’t have any way to be able to reach the American public with their message of togetherness and bi-partisanship. It just isn’t fair.

Proud to be a North Carolinian Today!

heath-shulerSo about 4 months ago, this journey into the blogging world began with Revolution calling me and talking about politics. We had just witnessed the election of a new President and realized that Congress was in the complete control of the Democrats. We were disgusted by the Republican Party and were interested in exploring the Libertarians. During one of these discussions we were talking about the so called “Blue Dog” Democrats when I said there was one to watch…

Playing Every Card in the Deck

Guest commentator Black Flag can appreciate the idea of playing what you got. It seems the Democrats in Congress, however, have throw more than a couple jokers into the deck over the last couple of weeks. So I was stumbling around checking things out today and I stumbled upon this little tidbit. It seems the Democrats are negotiating on terms to increase their power through additional representation in Congress…
How Democrats Intend to Retain Power in Congress

Hurry Up and Wait….

Those of you who have dealt with the government in any fashion, especially the military veterans out there, have heard that phrase a million times. It is used to describe the government process. Be fast and efficient now so that the government can then sit on its collective laurels and make you wait. In the military it is the equivalent of being told to show up for a 3:00 pm doctors appointment at 11:15 am. And we are hearing it every single day in the new Obama administration. And there is a reason for that.

Living in Their Own Reality….

Democrat Leaders, that is. I got a comment today that made me sit back and evaluate whether I was being fair for judging the Messiah’s actions so quickly, before they had a chance to succeed or fail. It was a fair comment based on what I had written in the “RUSH” post. But what I really started thinking about was the alternate reality that the Democratic Leadership is living in. So I figured I would open it for discussion.

Heir to the Throne… America’s Royalty?

We have been hearing a lot lately about Hillary Clinton’s soon to be vacated New York Senate seat. We have also seen a lot of discussion around the Roland Burris appointment in Illinois. I am going to focus on New York here, but my conclusion will apply to both situations. It looks more each day like Caroline Kennedy will be appointed to the Senate. To me this is a bit agonizing. Can’t the Kennedy’s just go away?

Is Obama’s Economic Stimulus Plan a Good Idea?

The Office of the President Elect (a truly made up office for the record) has issued several statements over the last several weeks that clue us in to the intentions that the messiah has for fixing the economy. One of the most covered and almost universally accepted in the media is the trillion dollar plus economic stimulus plan that he intends to get through Congress within the first couple of weeks in office. The question is: Is this a good idea?

Should Burris be seated?

We are watching the petty bickering in the United States Senate over the embattled Illinois governor’s selection to replace Barack Obama’s Senate seat. Today they refused to allow him admission to the United States Senate. Harry Reid led the charge. So the question is, should he be seated or should he be barred from being the next Senator from Illinois?

Stuart Smalley versus the People of Minnesota

Another article that I have tried my best not to write, but I simply cannot help myself. And the pictures below are simply too good to pass up. You guys all remember Stuart Smalley right? Stuart was a character on Saturday Night Live played by comedian Al Franken. He had no self esteem and would talk to himself in the mirror, affirming that he was “good enough, smart enough, and gosh darnit, people liked him”. My favorite skit was when Michael Jordan hosted the show and he had Michael look into the mirror and say the self affirmation speech. Jordan could barely keep a straight face. Well it seems that Stuart thinks he is good enough for the United States Senate…..

Copperfield and Chris Angel have Nothing on These Guys

I was over reading Coup D’etat’s blog a bit ago and she had an interesting post about the bailout bill. It seems that there were some things in that bill that no one wanted to talk about. I certainly hadn’t heard about it before. It made me annoyed enough to decide this was my topic for tonight. I didn’t have enough free time to research a big topic anyway. So the point of this post is that I want a bill to be only a bill, and nothing else…

Libertarian Party Act VII

libertarian-party-sealAs promised, we move directly into Act VII of dissecting the Libertarian Party Platform. That last part was fairly tough for me. I had been cruising along and starting to think that maybe I could get behind this party, and then I hit a financial roadblock. That hasn’t ruled them out, but I certainly need some convincing that those parts can work.

Let the Oil Companies Bail out Detroit (UPDATED)

You know, I touched on this briefly in the past, in the “Dude, Can I Borrow Some Cash to Buy Your Car” post. But now it seems that the potential bailout of the big three automakers has become a much bigger issue in each day’s headlines. So I am going to revisit it a bit. I have a real problem with the bailout on principle because if my business started failing the government wouldn’t take your money to bail me out. Yet the “big three” seem to think they are worthy of such a crime….

For Ruben… Taking My New Vice President to School

So in discussing some topics for what people want to learn I stipulated that the topics had to be something that the people wanted to learn about in the political world, as opposed to trying to understand the illogical minds of far left liberals. Because this blog is about people getting involved in politics and understanding the issues. Then Ruben reminded me that perhaps the one who needs to understand politics the most might be our new Vice President, who doesn’t quite seem to know exactly what this new job he is taking is all about…..

Libertarian Party Platform Act V

libertarian-party-sealWell we have certainly had our fair share of interesting conversations about the Libertarian Party platform thus far, haven’t we? A lot of opinions and disagreements. But that is what this is about: talking about our differences. I am finding that I am gaining a much better perspective on each of these issues through the conversation around them. So on to the first section of the Economic Liberties Section…
